Tackle the Toxins!

Tackling Toxic Exposure: without missing out on all the FUN stuff!

Picture this: you’re going about your day, doing your thing, when suddenly you stop to think about the air you’re breathing, the water you’re drinking, and the food you’re eating. What if I told you that each of these seemingly innocuous aspects of daily life could be silently exposing you to toxins that could harm your health?

Not to get too dramatic, but awareness is key, and taking action is essential. Discovering that heavy metal toxicity provided the perfect terrain for my chronic bacterial and yeast infection was a life changer! Maybe for you too?

Did you know that the average person encounters a startling array of toxins in their everyday life? From the air we breathe, polluted by vehicle emissions and industrial processes, to the water flowing from our taps, tainted by chemicals and contaminants, our bodies are constantly under siege.

Indoor air pollution can be up to five times worse than outdoor air pollution, due to factors such as cooking with gas, chemicals in our furniture and building material, and using toxic cleaning products.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that over 44 million Americans get their drinking water from sources with lead contamination. Chemicals such as chlorine, fluoride, and pharmaceutical residues have been found in drinking water supplies, raising concerns about long-term health effects.

Please don’t run and hide. As much as this is an unpleasant conversation, there are ways to become toxin smart!

Let’s break it down, shall we?

First up, we’ve got air pollution, the sneaky culprit lurking in the atmosphere, ready to infiltrate our lungs and wreak havoc on our health. Then there’s water contamination, the silent saboteur hiding in plain sight, waiting to slip past our defenses and compromise our well-being. And don’t even get me started on food and agriculture – pesticides, herbicides, additives, & glyphosate…oh my!

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) publishes an annual “Dirty Dozen” list of fruits and vegetables with the highest pesticide residues, emphasizing the importance of choosing organic options when possible.

The use of antibiotics and growth hormones in livestock farming can contribute to antibiotic resistance and hormone disruption in humans who consume these products.

Lastly, our household and body care products, the everyday essentials that may be harboring harmful chemicals, unbeknownst to us. The average person is exposed to hundreds of chemicals daily through personal care products such as shampoo, soap, lotion, and makeup. Common household items like cleaners, air fresheners, and laundry detergents often contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can contribute to indoor air pollution and respiratory issues.

So, what’s a conscientious individual to do in the face of such pervasive toxicity?

  1. Step one: Awareness. Cue the Environmental Working Group (EWG), your go-to resource for all things toxin-related. With their wealth of information and handy-dandy databases, you’ll be armed with the knowledge you need to make informed choices about the products you use and the food you eat.
  2. Step two: Reduce Exposure. Swap out those chemical-laden cleaning products for eco-friendly alternatives, opt for organic produce whenever possible, and invest in a quality water filter to keep contaminants at bay. Remember, this change doesn’t have to happen overnight. Small changes over a longer period of time are perfect!
  3. Step three: Improve your detox drainage pathways – your body’s natural detox system against toxins. Hydration, healthy bowel movement, sweating, nutrition, exercise – it’s all part of the detoxification dance. And let’s not forget about a deeper dive into seasonal cleansing, a time-honored tradition for giving your body a much-needed reset and reboot.

If you would like me to create a list of some low hanging fruit on this slightly overwhelming conversation, then reply to this newsletter with a thumbs up and I would be happy to put that together for the Mid-May newsletter.

In the battle against toxic exposure, knowledge is power, and action is key. Armed with awareness and armed with action, we can take control of our health and create a safer, healthier environment for ourselves and future generations. So go forth, my friends, and tackle toxic exposure with gusto. Your body will thank you for it.
