The Hidden Toxins: What You Need to Know
‘Tis the season! If you’ve been following me for a while, you know this topic well—detoxification and how to navigate toxins in an increasingly polluted world.
Let’s talk about how to protect yourself, your family, and even your pets. Spring is the perfect time to reset and detox from the consistent exposure to environmental toxins that we simply can’t avoid.
To give some context the past eight months, I’ve been part of Dr. Whitfield’s Functional Medicine Team, working closely with women recovering from Breast Implant Illness post-explant surgery. One of our favorite tools in this process is the Total Toxin Test, which reveals a person’s toxic burden. After reviewing nearly 75 tests and witnessing the staggering levels of toxicity in our patients, I feel confident making this bold statement: Everyone should consider a seasonal detox!
The Reality of Toxic Load
We are all carrying toxins—there’s no escaping it. The difference between those who feel well and those experiencing symptoms often comes down to how efficiently their bodies are eliminating toxins. Daily detox functions like hydration, sweating, bowel movements, and movement are essential, yet many of us still need additional support.
The challenge? We get so busy making a living and caring for others that we neglect ourselves.
But here’s the real question: Is falling ill an option for you right now? Probably not.
Look around—illness is everywhere. Children are getting cancer, dogs are developing autoimmune diseases, and the elderly are often overwhelmed with medications that may be doing more harm than good. A seasonal detox is a proactive way to keep things from piling up into a mountain of dysfunction. And if you’re already there, be patient. Healing happens layer by layer. You can heal!
The Most Common Toxins I See..
After reviewing numerous Total Toxin Tests, here are the biggest offenders and how they impact our health:
BPA (found in plastics, canned food linings, and receipts) mimics estrogen and disrupts hormones. Reduce exposure by using glass or stainless steel, avoiding canned foods, declining receipts, and avoiding plastics labeled with recycling codes 3 or 7.
Pesticides, commonly used in agriculture, interfere with hormones and have been linked to neurological disorders and cancers. Choose organic produce, wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly, and support sustainable farming.
Glyphosate, a widely used herbicide, disrupts gut health, contributes to inflammation in the gut, and increases disease risk. Avoid GMOs, filter your water, and support regenerative agriculture.
Mycotoxins, toxic mold compounds, can contaminate food and indoor spaces, weakening immunity and respiratory health. Reduce risk by storing food properly, choosing mycotoxin-tested coffee and grains, improving ventilation, and using HEPA air purifiers.
Heavy Metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, aluminum, arsenic) accumulate in the body, leading to neurological and hormonal issues. Minimize exposure by filtering your water, eating organic produce, and choosing low-mercury seafood.
VOCs, found in household products and building materials, contribute to respiratory issues and hormone disruption. Reduce exposure by using non-toxic cleaners, low-VOC paints, and air purifiers.
Don’t Run, Don’t Panic—Get Smart!
This might feel overwhelming, but there are simple ways to become toxin-smart. Let’s break it down:
Air Pollution: A silent threat that infiltrates our lungs and impacts our health.
Water Contamination: A hidden danger that can compromise well-being.
Food & Agriculture: Pesticides, herbicides, additives, and glyphosate—oh my!
Household & Body Care Products: Many everyday items harbor harmful chemicals.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) publishes an annual “Dirty Dozen” list of fruits and vegetables with the highest pesticide residues. They also provide databases to check the safety of personal care products, household cleaners, and even city water quality. (CLICK HERE to research your body care product! )
Three Steps to Detox Smarter
Awareness – Knowledge is power! Use trusted resources like EWG to check product safety and make informed choices.
Reduce Exposure – Swap chemical-laden cleaning products for eco-friendly alternatives, buy organic when possible, and invest in a good water filter and air purifiers. Small changes over time create lasting impact!
Support Detox Pathways – Hydration, regular bowel movements, sweating, nutrient-rich food, and movement all help eliminate toxins. For deeper cleansing, consider a seasonal detox to reset your body. (Need guidance? CLICK HERE for my BALANCE WITHIN spring cleanse protocol!)
